What is Asbestos?

Asbestos is a set of six naturally occurring silicate minerals exploited commercially for their desirable physical properties. They all have in common their asbestiform habit, long, (1:20) thin fibrous crystals. The most commonly found building materials that contain asbestos are asbestos cement products. The use of all forms of asbestos has been banned nationally since 31 December 2003.
